Woman raped by father-in-law, murdered and buried beneath street pit; Crime concealed for two months

Faridabad, Jun 27: In a chilling revelation from Haryana’s Faridabad, a 24-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly raped by her father-in-law, murdered, and buried in a 10-foot-deep pit just outside her marital home. The brutal crime, committed in April, came to light only two months later, after police recovered the woman’s partially decomposed body on June 21, following a tip-off.

The victim, originally from Shikohabad in Firozabad district, had married into the Faridabad family in July 2023. Her relatives alleged that she faced persistent dowry harassment, which culminated in her gruesome death.

Police sources confirmed that the father-in-law has confessed to both the rape and the murder during custodial interrogation. He remains in three-day police remand, while three other family members — including the husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law — have also been booked in the case.

As per the police, the plot was meticulously hatched on April 14. To establish an alibi, the mother-in-law was sent to attend a wedding in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. A week later, on the night of April 21, the husband allegedly laced the food of his wife and sister with sleeping pills. With both women unconscious and in separate rooms, the father-in-law entered the victim’s room, raped her, and later summoned his son to assist in disposing of the body.

The woman’s body was dumped into a pit excavated in advance, under the pretext of drainage repairs. Witnesses from the neighbourhood believed the construction work was part of regular civic maintenance. The pit was filled with bricks and soil, and a concrete slab was laid over it — a chilling attempt to hide the crime in plain sight.

Shockingly, just four days later, the family filed a missing person’s complaint on April 25 — a move now seen as a calculated effort to mislead investigators.

Police sources stated that the woman had returned to her parental home for over a year after facing abuse soon after her wedding. Her sister revealed that the family was unhappy with the dowry and continuously demanded more cash and gifts. These dowry-related accusations are being actively investigated as a motive.

Following the body’s recovery, a post-mortem was conducted and an FIR has been lodged against all four accused under charges of rape, murder, dowry harassment and criminal conspiracy.

The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, raising serious concerns over women’s safety, dowry-related violence, and the alarming extent to which crimes are being masked in domestic settings.
