Margao, Jun 25: In a major boost to Goa’s maritime workforce, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced that the Seafarers Pension Scheme will now be made a permanent benefit for all Goan seafarers. He made the declaration while addressing a large gathering during the Seafarers Day celebrations organised by the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) in Margao.

The Chief Minister further assured that if his government returns to power in 2027, the monthly pension will be increased by Rs 1,000 — taking it from the current Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500. “We recognize the sacrifices and contributions of our Goan seafarers. This scheme is a token of our gratitude and a step towards ensuring their financial security,” Dr Sawant said.

He also reaffirmed the state government’s continued support to seafarers and their families in times of emergencies or hardship.

The event also honoured former Chief Minister and ex-seafarer Churchill Alemao for his service both at sea and in public life. Several seafarers who have completed 25 years of maritime service were felicitated by Dr Sawant and Alemao.

This year’s Seafarers Day was themed “My Ship, No Harassment,” with a strong appeal by GSAI President for a workplace free from harassment for Indian seafarers. Dr Sawant responded positively, assuring that the government would take up the issue through appropriate policy interventions.

Former MP Narendra Sawaikar, also present at the event, praised the dedication and resilience of Goan seafarers, acknowledging their vital contribution to the state’s economy.
The celebration saw a large turnout of seafarers, their families, and supporters from across Goa.
