Dhar, Jun 24: In a deeply disturbing incident from Madhya Pradesh, a man allegedly ‘sold’ his wife to his friend to clear a gambling debt of Rs 50,000, following which the woman was reportedly raped by the friend. The shocking case has come to light in Dhar district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident was first reported at the women's police station in Indore, where the woman currently resides. Due to the grave nature of the allegation, the police registered a 'zero FIR' and transferred the case to Kanwan police station in Dhar district for further action. A zero FIR allows a police station to register a complaint of a cognisable offence irrespective of jurisdiction.

Kanwan police station in-charge Abhay Neema said the woman accused her husband, a resident of Kanwan area (around 35 km from Dhar), of gambling and falling heavily into debt. She alleged that he struck a deal with a friend who had loaned him Rs 50,000 and forced her into a physical relationship with him to settle the dues.

“The woman has stated in her complaint that her husband, due to his gambling addiction, could not repay the amount and pushed her into this ordeal as repayment,” Neema said. Both the husband and his friend are currently absconding and a search operation is underway, he added.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Dhar, Geetesh Kumar Garg, confirmed the case is being thoroughly investigated. “The victim’s detailed statement will be recorded in Indore. We are treating the matter with utmost seriousness,” Garg said.

The incident has triggered outrage and raised serious concerns about domestic abuse and exploitation of women under the guise of marital authority.
