New Delhi, Jun 23: Veteran Indian hockey forward Lalit Upadhyay has announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing an illustrious career to a close after over a decade of stellar service to the national team. The 31-year-old, known for his flair, composure, and match-winning performances, was a key figure in India’s bronze medal-winning campaigns at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Lalit made the announcement through an emotional social media post shortly after India’s final FIH Pro League 2024-25 match against Belgium on Sunday. “This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams,” he wrote. “From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice — it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride.”

A native of Varanasi, Lalit became the first Olympian from his city in 26 years. He made his debut for the senior team at the 2014 World Cup and went on to earn 183 international caps, scoring 67 goals. A gifted playmaker and versatile forward, he became a vital part of India’s frontline over the years, admired for his on-field intelligence and consistency in crunch moments.

Lalit's final appearance in India colours came against Australia on June 15.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey paid glowing tribute to the departing star. “Lalit has been one of the most graceful and dedicated forwards of his generation. His journey from the narrow lanes of Varanasi to standing on the Olympic podium twice is nothing short of inspirational,” said Tirkey. “We thank him for his selfless service to Indian hockey and wish him the very best for the next phase of his life.”

Beyond the Olympic medals, Lalit played pivotal roles in several other major victories, including the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy, the 2017 Asia Cup, and India’s gold medal run at the 2022 Asian Games. He also earned the Arjuna Award in 2021 for his exceptional contribution to Indian hockey.

As one of the finest forwards of his era, Lalit leaves behind a legacy of resilience, dedication, and excellence — a true inspiration for aspiring hockey players across the country.
