Child torture in Nellore over theft suspicion sparks outrage

Nellore, Jun 23: In a shocking case of brutality, a 10-year-old girl was allegedly tortured by her neighbours in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district on suspicion of stealing mobile phones. The child, identified as Chenchamma, was reportedly burned with a hot iron rod and beaten by four individuals in Kuditepalem Kakarla Dibba, where she lived with her aunt, Sannari Manikyam.

According to reports, the police acted after locals alerted them to the horrific incident. A case has been registered against the aunt and four others involved in the assault. A viral video of the incident, now circulating widely on social media, shows the visibly distressed child sobbing and pleading her innocence as she is forcibly held and tortured.

Police have launched a detailed investigation into the case.

In a separate but equally disturbing incident from West Bengal, a 12-year-old boy allegedly took his own life after being humiliated over accusations of theft. The class 7 student reportedly consumed pesticide after a shopkeeper forced him to do sit-ups in public for allegedly stealing a packet of chips in Panskura, Paschim Medinipur. The boy had called out to the shopkeeper before taking the chips, but after getting no response, he walked off with a packet. On returning, the shopkeeper confronted him, slapped him, and made him perform sit-ups in front of bystanders.

Both incidents have triggered widespread anger and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures and swift legal action against the perpetrators.
