Leeds, Jun 22: Jasprit Bumrah once again proved why he’s among the finest pacers in world cricket, grabbing a superb 5/83 to hand India a narrow six-run first-innings lead over England on Day 3 of the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Headingley.
England, bolstered by Harry Brook’s spirited 99, were eyeing a lead themselves after India’s 471. But Bumrah’s relentless spells, despite four dropped catches off his bowling, turned the tide back in India’s favour as the hosts were eventually dismissed for 465 in 100.4 overs.
Brook, who was playing on his home turf, dazzled with fluent strokeplay but fell heartbreakingly short of a century. His innings ended when he miscued a bouncer from Prasidh Krishna, who was otherwise inconsistent alongside Mohammed Siraj. The duo picked up wickets but failed to maintain pressure through tight lines.
Earlier in the post-lunch session, Jamie Smith smacked Prasidh for a four and a six, but fell attempting another pull, thanks to a sharp relay catch by B Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja. Brook continued to punish loose deliveries, even after a dropped chance by Jaiswal on 83. He peppered boundaries before succumbing to a bouncer from Prasidh.
Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse then launched a brisk counter-attack, stitching together a 55-run stand. Woakes brought up 2,000 Test runs with back-to-back sixes off Prasidh, while Carse punished Siraj before being yorked by the pacer.
Bumrah cleaned up the tail in classic fashion—beating Woakes with a fuller delivery to rattle the stumps, then claiming his fifth by knocking over Josh Tongue with a picture-perfect delivery that hit the top of off-stump.
