New York, Jun 20: After years of operating largely under the radar, women’s tackle football is charging into the spotlight as two of the top leagues prepare for their championship games, both set to air on ESPN2.
The Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC) will make its championship debut on the network this Saturday, broadcasting live from the Dallas Cowboys’ Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. The title clash will feature the Washington Prodigy taking on the Texas Elite Spartans. Now in its sixth season, the WNFC boasts 17 teams from 14 states and Washington, DC.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) will return to ESPN2 for its championship game on July 26 at the iconic Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The stadium even features MVP jerseys from previous WFA title games, signifying the league’s growing legacy.
Founded in 2009, the WFA has seen participation skyrocket by over 300%, according to Commissioner Lisa King. The league’s top tier includes 12 teams from nine states and DC, with a total of 55 teams across three divisions. The WFA also features international representation from teams in Europe, Africa, South America, and North America.
Despite increasing popularity, neither league currently pays regular player salaries. However, the WNFC plans to award $20,000 to the championship-winning team and provide incentives for individual accolades, aided by major sponsors like Adidas, Dove, and Riddell.
The WFA, supported by sponsors including Wilson, offsets some player costs through ticket sales and licensing deals.
With national exposure and growing sponsorship support, women’s football is steadily making its mark on the American sports landscape.
