London, Jun 19: As the high-voltage five-match Test series between India and England draws near, England captain Ben Stokes has delivered a bold message—his side has "no fear" of India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.
Speaking to media ahead of the series opener, Stokes acknowledged Bumrah’s world-class credentials but firmly stated that no single player can dictate the outcome of such a long series. “We know his class and what he brings to any team he plays for, but in terms of fear—definitely not,” said the all-rounder.
“I don’t think one bowler alone is going to win the series for either team. All eleven players have to stand up,” Stokes added, emphasizing the importance of collective performance over individual brilliance.
The remarks come as a psychological move ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested series. Bumrah, who has tormented England in the past with his unorthodox style and precision, remains a key figure in India’s bowling attack. But Stokes’ comments suggest that the visiting team is prepared to neutralize his threat.
Meanwhile, senior batter Joe Root also spoke passionately about his role under Stokes' leadership. With over 3,000 runs since handing over the captaincy in 2022, Root said he now wants to "give back" to the man who supported him throughout his own captaincy stint.
“Ben did so much for me as vice-captain—now it’s my turn,” Root told Sky Sports. “It was weird at first, coming back to the team just as a player. But I knew the best way to support Ben was by scoring runs and setting an example.”
Root’s average of 56.67 in the last 36 Tests reflects not just form, but a seamless transition into a new team culture driven by the aggressive 'Bazball' philosophy.
With England eyeing their first Test series win in India since 2012, and India seeking to extend their dominant home record, all eyes will be on the first ball as two heavyweights of red-ball cricket lock horns.
