Leeds, Jun 17: As India gears up for a challenging five-match Test series against England starting this Friday in Leeds, all-rounder Shardul Thakur has expressed confidence in the young Indian squad's potential to script history on English soil.
Speaking ahead of the series, Thakur recalled his memorable stint during the 2021-22 tour, where India led 2-1 before the final Test was postponed due to Covid-19 and eventually lost, resulting in a 2-2 draw. “That series remains one of my fondest memories. We won at Lord’s and The Oval, and though we couldn’t finish with a win, it was one of the best I’ve been part of,” said Thakur in a video shared by the BCCI.

With senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepping away from red-ball cricket, the Shubman Gill-led Indian side faces the daunting task of conquering the English conditions. But Thakur remains upbeat. “It’s exciting to play in England – the weather, the conditions, they always challenge you. It’s good to see fresh energy in the squad. The new talents are exciting, and we’re here to surprise England,” he added.
Having taken eight wickets and scored two fifties in the previous series, Thakur is hopeful that India can clinch their first Test series win in England since 2007. This series also marks the beginning of India’s campaign in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.
