The blast occurred around 6:00 am near K Balang village in Rourkela, where a joint team of the CRPF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Odisha Police was engaged in a search operation as part of an intensified anti-Naxal drive.

Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Satyaban Kumar Singh (34), belonging to the 134th Battalion of CRPF, sustained critical injuries on his left leg due to the powerful explosion.
