Udupi, Jun 11: “I had the privilege of meeting George Fernandes during the Emergency when I was advocating for several politicians. Today, it is a great honour to receive an award instituted in his name. This recognition is a matter of immense pride for me,” said Justice N Santosh Hegde, former judge of the Supreme Court of India and retired Lokayukta of Karnataka.

He was addressing the gathering after receiving the Padma Vibhushan George Fernandes Memorial National Award – 2025 at a grand ceremony held on the morning of June 8 at Hotel Ocean Pearl, Times Square Building, Kalsanka, Udupi. The event was organised by Jayashreekrishna Parisara Premi Samiti, an NGO committed to environmental and developmental causes in the undivided Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The event was presided over by Nithyananda Kotian, president of the committee.

In his speech, Justice Hegde highlighted the role of the Lokayukta in bringing justice to the forefront. “I felt like a coward before I became the Lokayukta. Only after assuming that role did I witness the deep-rooted injustices across the legislature, executive, and judiciary. It is not merely the fault of individuals; it is a reflection of a deteriorating society,” he said.

He lamented the decline in moral values, noting how those with criminal backgrounds are often celebrated, while honest individuals find little space in today’s society. “Earlier, our forefathers and parents taught us values of humanity. Today, both parents working leaves little time for such upbringing. This vacuum leads to selfishness and illegal activities. We must inculcate strong moral and human values in our children,” he stressed.

Captain Ganesh Karnik, advisor to the committee, paid rich tributes to the late George Fernandes, describing him as a “truthful and selfless leader” who rose above caste and creed for the nation’s welfare. “It is commendable that this award honours such a legacy by recognising an equally deserving individual in Justice Hegde,” he said.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, MP of Udupi Lok Sabha constituency, said: “Justice Hegde has illuminated society through his honesty and integrity. His courage to speak the truth makes him a force to reckon with. This award presentation is truly meaningful.”

Actor Suman Talwar Poojary, guest of honour, expressed happiness at being part of the event: “It’s heartening that a distinguished achiever from our coastal district has received this prestigious award. Despite being away from his native place, Thonse Jayakrishna Shetty is working tirelessly for its development and legacy.”

K P Jagadish Adhikari, state coordinator, lauded the presence of Justice Hegde on the stage, describing it as a privilege and a moment of inspiration for the youth.

Thonse Jayakrishna A Shetty, founder of Jayashreekrishna Parisara Premi Samiti, in his keynote address, stated: “Justice Hegde exemplifies the same values that George Fernandes stood for – honesty, integrity, and social justice. This award would have certainly pleased Fernandes’ soul.”

He highlighted the committee’s mission to balance development with environmental conservation. “Our NGO has been able to carry out several initiatives with George Fernandes’ support during his tenure as a minister. Although cities with ports should thrive, development in our region has lagged. We urge that the upcoming International Investors’ Meet be hosted in Mangaluru. We’ve also addressed issues like power cuts and water purity in the Netravati river with the deputy chief minister,” he added.

Thonse Shetty reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to promoting communal harmony and industrial development in the twin districts and called upon public support to continue this mission.

President Nithyananda Kotian noted that the award ceremony marked a major milestone in the organisation’s 25-year journey. “In our silver jubilee year, we are proud to honour a legendary personality like Justice Hegde. Our founder, Thonse Jayakrishna Shetty, has tirelessly united communities for regional progress. I urge everyone to support us in making the jubilee celebrations and future initiatives a grand success,” he said.

Prominent guests at the event included Ivan D’Souza, MLC of Karnataka and guest of honour; Mundkur Surendra Salian, honorary general secretary of the committee; Sadananda N Acharya, honorary treasurer; and several other respected personalities from Mumbai and Udupi.

Dayasagar Chowta, spokesperson of the committee, anchored the event with grace and efficiency. A large gathering of local dignitaries, committee members, and well-wishers marked the occasion, making it a memorable and impactful celebration.
