Mumbai, Jun 11: In a shocking incident underscoring the dangerous obsession with social media stardom, a 17-year-old boy from Nepal was critically injured while attempting to film a staged suicide reel for Instagram in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district on Tuesday.

The incident took place at a hotel premises located on Karamala Road in the Jamkhed area during the early hours of the day, police sources said.

According to officials, the teenager, accompanied by a friend, was attempting to create a dramatic video of a fake suicide by hanging. During the shoot, the youth tiead a cloth to a tree and wrapped it around his neck in a noose — meant only for visual effect. However, the plan took a terrifying turn when the cloth tightened and began choking him.

Realizing the danger, the boy’s friend immediately rushed to his aid and managed to untie the noose just in time. However, the teen sustained internal injuries to his neck and was rushed to a private hospital in Jamkhed, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Jamkhed Police officials visited the hospital and recorded the friend’s statement. “We are conducting further investigations into the matter,” said an officer from the local police station.

The incident has raised serious concerns over the increasing number of young individuals engaging in perilous acts for fleeting internet fame. Authorities have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and counsel their children about the risks involved in such viral trends.
