Karkala, Jun 11: In a heartbreaking development that has left the Kambala community and animal lovers in mourning, Chinkra, the five-year-old buffalo who recently went viral for his adorable handshake video, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, due to dengue fever.
Chinkra, the beloved of Kaushik Dinakar Shetty from Beluvai, was not just a viral internet star but also a medal-winning participant in several Kambala competitions. Known for his unique ability to shake hands and his friendly demeanour, Chinkra had captured hearts across coastal Karnataka and beyond.

The buffalo shot to fame after a video of him sweetly offering his paw to his owner, Kaushik, spread like wildfire on social media. People were charmed by the bond between the duo and Chinkra’s intelligent, playful nature.
But Chinkra was not just a digital darling — he was also a competitor in the Kambala arena, participating in the junior rope category alongside Mukesh Kona of Karkala. Over the last season, Chinkra bagged multiple accolades, becoming a well-known face in Kambala circles.
Chinkra reportedly fell ill a few days ago and was diagnosed with dengue fever. Despite treatment efforts, he succumbed to the illness on Tuesday. The sudden death of the young and promising Kambala participant has led to an outpouring of grief on social media.
