Mangaluru, Jun 10: Mount Carmel Central School, observed World Environment Day with a vibrant and thought-provoking celebration held in the school auditorium on June 10. Centered on the global theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the event was hosted by the students of grades X A, B, E, and grade XII, and compered with grace and confidence by Samuel D’Souza and Anissa Valdar.

The programme began with a solemn interfaith prayer service, invoking gratitude to the Almighty for the Earth and all its living beings. This was followed by an elegant welcome dance that set a reverent and joyful tone for the morning. Tejas Chandra extended a warm welcome to the gathering and introduced the chief guest, Madam Prashamsa Bhandary, a committed wildlife biologist and environmentalist. Karen Lobo, Nawal Poojari, and Tulasi eloquently highlighted the significance of World Environment Day, while also paying tribute to global environmentalists whose dedication continues to inspire change.

The cultural performances brought the message of environmental responsibility to life. A powerful mime titled ‘Beat Overall Pollution’ portrayed the devastating impact of human negligence on nature. This was followed by a soulful musical piece advocating the elimination of single-use plastics, and a thematic dance that underscored the urgent need to protect forests, wildlife, and water bodies critical pillars of ecological balance.

A special feature of the event was the felicitation of exceptional achievers in sports and academics. Jesnia Correa, a skating champion, was recognized for her remarkable achievements: a gold medal in the 500m and silver in the 100m at the School Games Federation of India, Delhi, and three gold medals (500m, 1000m and Road 1 Lap) at the 8th Ranking National Championship in Cochin, Kerala. In academics, Jaelyn Venicia Pinto of grade IX was awarded for securing rank 1 internationally in the Silver Zone International Social Studies Olympiad (2024–2025), with a perfect score of 100/100, earning a cash prize of Rs 3,500/-. Lavanya Pramod Kumar of grade V was also honoured for achieving State rank 3 in the same Olympiad—a commendable feat of academic excellence.

In her keynote address, madam Prashamsa Bhandary inspired students to cultivate empathy, not just toward fellow humans, but also toward animals and nature. She emphasized that environmental stewardship is not the duty of a few, but a shared responsibility that begins with individual choices.

Principal Sr Melissa, in her message, expressed deep appreciation for the chief guest’s choice of career in wildlife conservation, describing it as an inspiration for the younger generation. She encouraged students to embrace sustainable practices, avoid plastic in daily use, and contribute actively to keeping their surroundings clean.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Manav Menon and Angel Fernandes, who expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the day’s celebration.

The World Environment Day observance at Mount Carmel Central School went beyond ritual - it was a resounding call to action. Blending cultural expression with environmental awareness, the programme left students with a deeper sense of purpose in caring for the Earth. The message of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ echoed powerfully throughout, urging each individual to become a responsible steward of the planet.
