Thane, Jun 9: In a tragic incident, five passengers are feared dead after falling off an overcrowded local train en route from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kasara. The mishap occurred near Mumbra station in Thane district on Monday.

According to officials, around 10 to 12 passengers reportedly fell from the train due to excessive crowding. Many were hanging by the doors, a common sight in Mumbai's suburban network during peak hours. Railway officials have confirmed that the accident was caused by overloading in the compartments.

Emergency services rushed to the site and the injured have been taken to the nearest hospital. Railway authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Reacting swiftly, the Railways has announced that all rakes currently under production for the Mumbai Suburban network will be equipped with automatic door closers. Additionally, efforts are underway to retrofit existing rakes with door closure systems to enhance commuter safety.
