Gaza, Jun 8: As Israel's devastating war on Gaza extends into its 20th month, international condemnation continues to mount. Yet, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shows no sign of backing down — despite Hamas offering a deal, including surrendering Gaza's governance to a technocratic administration.
The United Nations Security Council has overwhelmingly voted for a ceasefire, only to be blocked by a US veto. Meanwhile, Hamas has expressed willingness to hand over all captives and cede control, but Israel remains insistent on the “complete defeat” of Hamas.
Critics argue that Netanyahu is prolonging the war for personal political reasons. “There’s ample evidence by now that the only reason this genocide is ongoing is because Netanyahu wants it to continue,” said Elia Ayoub, a researcher and podcast host.
Netanyahu, who is currently facing corruption charges, is believed to be using the war to distract from his legal troubles and avoid accountability for security lapses during the October 7 Hamas attack. “He’s afraid once it’s done, eyes will rightfully turn to him,” said Diana Buttu, a legal expert and former PLO adviser.
Despite Hamas losing top leaders — including Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar — and offering to relinquish power, Israel continues its offensive. Gaza has witnessed the deaths of over 54,300 Palestinians and more than 124,000 injuries, according to its Health Ministry. The UN has declared Gaza the “hungriest place on Earth,” warning that all residents face famine.
Analysts suggest Israel’s real motive could be demographic: reducing Gaza’s population by forcing people into tiny, aid-starved zones. “Israel is no longer fighting Hamas,” said journalist Meron Rappaport. “The goal is to push people out of Gaza.”
Haaretz recently reported that 82% of Jewish Israelis support Gaza’s expulsion — a scenario Netanyahu may view as fulfilling his promise to prevent a Palestinian state.
Experts say Netanyahu’s position is secure as long as the war continues. “It doesn’t matter what Hamas offers,” said Mairav Zonszein of the International Crisis Group. “This war is going to continue until Netanyahu is forced to stop it — and that can only come from Trump.”
