Yangon, Jun 7: Myanmar authorities have arrested 16 people — including a six-year-old girl — in connection with the assassination of retired general and former ambassador Cho Tun Aung, who was shot dead outside his Yangon residence on May 22. The attack was claimed by the anti-junta group "Golden Valley Warriors."

State-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported that 13 men and three women were arrested from various locations. Among them were the wife and young daughter of the suspected gunman, Myo Ko Ko. However, the report did not clarify the grounds for detaining the child.

According to authorities, Myo Ko Ko and another accomplice approached the general’s home on bicycles and fatally shot him before fleeing to a hideout.

Myanmar has been embroiled in civil conflict since the military seized power in a 2021 coup. While heavy fighting mainly takes place in rural areas, Yangon, the commercial hub, has seen a surge in targeted grenade and gun attacks against junta-linked figures.

Despite recent territorial losses to resistance forces, analysts believe the junta still maintains control with support from a strong air force backed by Russia and China.
