FIR filed against RCB, KSCA, event firm in Bengaluru stampede; Rs 25 lac aid for victims announced

Bengaluru, June 5: An FIR has been filed against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and event organisers DNA Entertainment Networks in connection with the stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 and injured 56 during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations on June 4.

The case, registered at Cubbon Park Police Station, includes serious charges such as culpable homicide not amounting to murder and unlawful assembly. RCB is named as Accused No. 1, DNA Entertainment as Accused No. 2, and KSCA as Accused No. 3.

In response to the tragedy, the Karnataka government has announced Rs 10 lac compensation per deceased family, with KSCA and RCB adding Rs 5 lac and Rs 10 lac respectively, totaling Rs 25 lac each. RCB has also committed to covering medical expenses for the injured and created a special fund, ‘RCB Cares,’ to support victims.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu cognisance and registered a Public Interest Litigation, seeking accountability and preventive measures.

The court has issued notices to the state government and awaits detailed status reports. The government has ordered a magisterial probe led by Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha, who will record statements from all parties and hold public hearings from June 11 to 13.

The stampede occurred when Gate No. 12 was suddenly opened amid an overwhelming crowd estimated at 2.5 lac—far exceeding the stadium’s 45,000 capacity. Police resorted to a lathi charge to control surging fans near gates 18 to 20. Eleven deaths were confirmed across nearby hospitals—Bowring, Vaidehi, and Manipal.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar accepted full responsibility, lamenting the unexpected scale of celebrations after RCB’s first IPL title in 18 years and expressing grief for the victims.

First of all...we ourselves to be blamed. The IPL is a commercial event and a big money making ( black into white...like liquor business) opportunity. There have been many such stampade accidents..for e.g...in Saudi Arabia and USA football stadiums. In India too during ...Kumbhamela...thousands have vanished. However well it is organized it is our responsibility too to judge the situation and decide accordingly. ....instead of blaming each other.

Rcb is a franchise, there was no need for state to conduct this function. Franchise could have done this over the weekend with full preparedness. Wonder how Siddu and DKS invited people to join and celebrate. Failure of management by state government. They are experts in commenting and questioning operation sindhoor .The govt thought that it is as easy as planning a functon at home. Even family function needs good planning. The state govt's (mis)management has claimed so many lives. They cannot manage a crowd and how will they manage a state. It is a black mark and black day for kannadigas. Can not blame police, since they were not given enough time to plan. When covid cases are on the rise, it is foolishness to have planned at the cost of the lives of common people.

It is better to Ban this Money making Game. The number of hours spent by numerous people within the Stadium and outside the Stadium watching TV, Youtube, facebook, chatting and betting during and after IPL matches could have been put to some better use.

First of all when you are organizing such a large event, you should have organized in Open Grounds like Palace Grounds. There was no need to be in a hurry to arrange such a big event. When people hear something is free there is always a rush. There must be some rules and regulations followed. Hope civic sense prevails in the upcoming seasons or just have an event with few guests and show live.

This incident looks absolutely horrific, but managing such a large crowd is an incredibly difficult task. The fact that there were more people in the stadium than its capacity was a warning sign of danger. The mismanagement led to such a massive tragedy. Going forward, all fans should be cautious when visiting such places because anything can happen at any time. May God grant peace to those who lost their lives, good health to those who are injured, and strength to their families to endure this sorrow.
