Indian Cancer Society, Oracle observe 'World No Tobacco Day' with public awareness programme

Mangalore, Jun 5: The Indian Cancer Society (ICS), Mangaluru Regional Office, in association with Oracle, observed "World No Tobacco Day" with an impactful public awareness program at the KSRTC Bus Stand in Mangaluru on Thursday, June 5.

The event was held in collaboration with the postgraduate department of Social Work, Mangalore University; the department of Social Work, Government First Grade College, Vittal; and A J Institute of Dental Sciences. The initiative aimed to educate the public about the health risks associated with tobacco use and to promote a tobacco-free lifestyle.

Rajesh Shetty, senior divisional controller, KSRTC, Mangaluru division graced the occasion and encouraged the team.

Dr Madna Shilpa addressed the gathering, highlighting the severe health consequences of tobacco consumption and its role in causing life-threatening illnesses, including cancer. To engage the public effectively, students from both - department of Social Work, Mangalore University and Government First Grade College, Vittal performed a powerful street play, spreading awareness about the dangers of tobacco in an accessible and compelling manner.

As part of the health outreach, the KSRTC staff — including drivers, conductors, technical staff — and members of the general public were offered free oral cancer screening by a team of professionals from A J Institute of Dental Sciences.

The programme received an enthusiastic response from commuters and passers-by, many of whom stopped to watch the performance and participated in meaningful interactions with the organising team. The initiative successfully conveyed a strong message about the importance of quitting tobacco and adopting healthier habits.
