Mumbai, Jun 4: In a major leap towards redefining urban mobility and easing traffic congestion, the Maharashtra government is all set to launch a water taxi service between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, slashing travel time to just 40 minutes. The innovative service will operate from the Radio Jetty at Gateway of India to the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport, offering commuters a fast, scenic, and eco-friendly alternative to the city's gridlocked roads.
The ambitious plan gained momentum after a high-level meeting chaired by Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane, who directed officials to chalk out a comprehensive action plan for the rollout. Construction of jetties and terminals will be carried out in phases, and the Airport Authority has been urged to expedite clearance proposals to facilitate swift implementation.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, Rane revealed that the service will deploy electric boats, aligning with the state’s broader vision of green mobility and sustainable infrastructure. The use of zero-emission vessels is expected to significantly reduce air and noise pollution, while ensuring passenger comfort.
This move is a part of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s 150-day action agenda, under which Rane emphasized the need for technology-driven, people-centric development. He called on the Ports Department to push for innovation, improve departmental rankings, and explore advanced port models from other states through study visits.
To further support seamless navigation, a real-time boat tracking mobile app is currently under development, aimed at improving safety, transparency, and commuter convenience.
Rane also stressed the importance of timely recruitment and filling departmental vacancies to avoid delays in project execution. As part of a larger maritime initiative, the department has been instructed to focus on developing green ports, reinforcing Maharashtra’s commitment to an eco-conscious transport ecosystem.
Backed by strong political will and strategic planning, the water taxi initiative is poised to revolutionize the daily travel experience for Mumbaikars, marking a new era of efficient, sustainable, and time-saving urban transport.
