Thivim, Jun 3: In a bold move to uphold public health standards, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday launched a high-impact inspection campaign across Madel Thivim, Karaswada, and the bustling Mapusa market yard. The operation, spearheaded by FDA Director Shweta Dessai, resulted in immediate closures, stern warnings, and the collection of fruit samples, sending a clear message to food businesses across the region.
A team comprising FDA officials Richard Noronha, Amit Mandrekar, and Darlan Diukar inspected nine food-related establishments, including snack manufacturers, sweet producers, a catering unit, and fruit vendors. The outcome was swift and decisive.
Citing severe lapses in hygiene and non-compliance with food safety norms, the FDA ordered one snack unit and a catering facility to cease operations immediately. Two additional units were issued improvement notices, mandating urgent corrective measures before resumption of business.
The Mapusa fruit yard, a major hub for local produce, also witnessed intense scrutiny. The FDA collected fruit samples from five vendors to test for harmful chemicals and potential adulterants. Officials emphasized that these checks are crucial to ensuring consumer safety and detecting banned substances, if any.
Speaking to Daijiworld, an FDA official said, “This drive is part of our commitment to public health. The Mapusa yard, being a high-traffic zone, requires constant vigilance. We aim to ensure that citizens are consuming food that is both clean and safe.”
The surprise inspections have stirred reactions from both consumers and vendors. While many welcomed the move, appreciating the FDA’s proactive stance, some traders expressed concern over the abrupt shutdowns. Nevertheless, the overarching message was one of safety over shortcuts.
As food safety concerns grow amidst rising reports of adulteration and poor hygiene practices, the FDA has vowed to intensify inspections in the days to come, with more surprise checks likely across Bardez and surrounding areas.
The public is being urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious food practices to ensure a healthier and safer community.
