Jakarta, Jun 3: India’s top badminton aces PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will headline the country’s campaign at the prestigious Indonesia Open 2025, a BWF Super 1000 tournament that kicks off Tuesday in Jakarta. With pride and ranking points at stake, the Indian contingent is geared up for a high-voltage week of action.
All eyes will be on two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, who is looking to reignite her form after a challenging season marred by early exits. Having made it to the pre-quarterfinals at the Singapore Open last week, Sindhu is hopeful of continuing her upward trajectory. But standing in her way in the very first round is Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara — a seasoned campaigner and former world No. 1. The encounter promises a battle of grit, experience, and redemption.
In men’s singles, world No. 17 Lakshya Sen returns to the court following a premature exit due to injury in Singapore. The Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist faces a daunting challenge straight away — Chinese superstar Shi Yuqi, currently ranked world No. 1. Despite the tough draw, fans remain optimistic about Sen’s fighting spirit and potential to stage an upset.
Veterans HS Prannoy and Kiran George will add depth to India’s men’s singles line-up. However, the absence of Kidambi Srikanth — fresh off a runner-up finish at the Malaysia Masters — will be felt.
Men’s doubles stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, ranked 27th in the world, enter the tournament with strong momentum. Their semifinal finish in Singapore was their third of the season, and the duo will be looking to go deeper in Jakarta to boost their position in the Road to Finals rankings.
The women’s singles category will also feature rising talents Malvika Bansod, Anupama Upadhaya, and Rakshita Ramraj, all of whom are eager to gain exposure and deliver surprise performances against higher-ranked opponents.
India’s hopes in women’s doubles rest with the consistent pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. Ranked world No. 10, the young duo has shown remarkable maturity on court this season and could well be the dark horses of the draw.
In mixed doubles, three Indian pairs will be in action: Dhruv Kapila–Tanisha Crasto, Rohan Kapoor–Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, and Sathish Karunakaran–Aadya Variyath. While still relatively unheralded on the world stage, these combinations are eager to make their mark.
With the stakes higher than ever and the Olympic cycle in full swing, Indian badminton fans will be watching closely, hoping Jakarta will serve as a turning point in the country's 2025 campaign.
