Manchester, Jun 1: Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha has officially joined Manchester United from Wolves in a club-record deal, bringing his prolific two-and-a-half-year spell at Molineux to an end.
The Red Devils triggered Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause, as reported by Sky Sports, after reaching an agreement on a structured payment plan over two years. The 26-year-old has penned a five-year contract, with an additional year option.
Cunha’s move marks the first signing for new manager Ruben Amorim since he took charge in November 2024. His arrival comes after United endured a challenging season that saw them slump to a 16th-place Premier League finish and end their campaign with a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
During his time at Wolves, Cunha netted 33 goals in 92 appearances and was crowned Wolves’ Player of the Season following a standout campaign. His memorable contributions included a stunning hat-trick at Chelsea—the club’s second-ever in the Premier League—and a dazzling ‘Olimpico’ strike against Manchester United on Boxing Day.
Cunha initially joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid on Christmas Day 2022, playing a key role in helping the club maintain its Premier League status before blossoming in the 2023/24 season. He ended that year as Wolves’ top scorer with 17 goals, six of which earned nominations for the Goal of the Season award, including two standout strikes at Fulham.
In his final game for Wolves, Cunha featured in a victory over Brentford, helping secure the club’s eighth successive season in the English top flight.
Manchester United, desperate to bolster their attacking firepower after finishing with a paltry 42 league goals—fewer than any other club except for the relegated sides—have been seeking to inject creativity, pace, and goals into their team. Last season’s arrivals, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, struggled to make a consistent impact, combining for just seven goals between them.
Cunha’s arrival is seen as a statement of intent from United as they look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign and restore their reputation among England’s elite.
