Kolkata, May 31: In a shocking and gruesome incident, a man was arrested in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Saturday after he was seen walking through the streets holding the severed head of his sister-in-law, police said.
The accused, identified as Bimal Mondal, was apprehended in Bharatgarh in the Basanti area on charges of murdering Nita Mondal, his sister-in-law, late Friday night.

The chilling crime came to light when horrified locals spotted the man wandering with the severed head in his hand, prompting them to alert the police. Some residents even managed to capture videos of the disturbing act as the man walked through the streets, still holding the blood-stained chopper used in the crime.
According to officials, the incident occurred after an altercation broke out between the accused and the victim at an open ground in the locality. “During the investigation, it was revealed that Bimal Mondal suddenly attacked Nita with a chopper during the fight, eventually beheading her,” a police official told.
In a dramatic turn, Bimal walked into the Basanti police station himself, carrying the severed head and the murder weapon. “We had already received multiple calls from locals, but before we could reach the scene, the accused surrendered at the station,” the officer added.
The police have sent the woman’s body for post-mortem and seized the weapon. Preliminary investigation suggests the murder may have been triggered by an ongoing property dispute between the two, officials said.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
