Panaji, May 28: In a landmark achievement, Goa has become the first state in India to attain 100% literacy, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Tuesday. The official declaration of this historic milestone will be made during the Statehood Day celebrations at Kala Academy, Panaji, on May 30.

Calling it a proud moment for the state and the nation, the Chief Minister noted that while Goa's literacy rate was previously at 94%, concerted efforts under the New India Literacy Programme helped bridge the remaining gap. The original goal was to achieve full literacy by December 19, 2024, but the target was met ahead of time.

The Ministry of Education has certified the achievement, confirming that Goa has successfully closed the final 6% literacy gap. The announcement during the 39th Statehood Day will mark a significant chapter in the state’s educational progress.
