USA, May 26: In a development that has sparked global concern, a newly identified variant of the coronavirus, dubbed NB.1.8.1, has been detected in the United States, following a notable surge in cases in parts of Asia, particularly China. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the variant has been identified in several international travellers entering the U.S., suggesting a possible pattern of global transmission.

The NB.1.8.1 variant has already made its presence felt in China, where COVID-19-related hospital admissions have increased sharply. In recent weeks, the percentage of severely ill respiratory patients testing positive for COVID-19 in Chinese hospitals has nearly doubled from 3.3% to 6.3%. Similarly, the proportion of emergency room patients testing positive has leapt from 7.5% to 16.2%. Taiwan has reported a 78% rise in hospital admissions, while Hong Kong is witnessing a 12-month high in COVID-related hospitalizations.

Reacting to the situation, Hong Kong authorities have reinstated advisories urging citizens to wear masks in public transport and crowded locations.

In the U.S., cases of the NB.1.8.1 variant have emerged in states such as California, Washington, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Hawaii. These infections were mostly recorded between late March and early May, often among travellers from countries like China, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, France, the Netherlands, and Spain. Despite these cases, CDC data indicates no significant spike in overall COVID-19 positivity rates, which are currently down by 12%.

Medical experts have identified a new pattern of symptoms among individuals infected with NB.1.8.1. These include:

• Persistent low-grade hyperthermia: Unlike the classic high fevers, patients are reporting sustained body temperatures between 37.6°C and 38.1°C, often without associated sweating or rapid breathing.

• Upper respiratory issues: Sore throat, mild fever, cough, and a runny nose remain common.

• Gastrointestinal issues: Some patients report nausea, poor appetite, and stomach discomfort.

• Neurological symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating are emerging symptoms.

• Severe fatigue: Many experience extreme tiredness and muscle weakness.

• Sleep disturbances and anxiety: Similar to the JN.1 variant, NB.1.8.1 has been linked with insomnia and heightened anxiety.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged that NB.1.8.1 exhibits a stronger ability to bind to human cells, potentially making it more contagious. However, there is currently no conclusive evidence suggesting that it leads to more severe illness or is more resistant to existing immunity or vaccines.

Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and adopt the following safety practices:

• Get vaccinated: Ensure that your COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are current.

• Wear masks: Especially in enclosed spaces and areas with poor ventilation.

• Maintain hygiene: Frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizers can help prevent infection.

• Monitor symptoms: Early detection can prevent the spread to vulnerable groups.

• Self-isolate if sick: Avoid contact with others if you develop symptoms.

As scientists continue to monitor the trajectory of NB.1.8.1, global cooperation and public adherence to safety measures remain essential in curbing its spread. Authorities worldwide are on high alert, and the situation remains dynamic.
