Gaya, Aug 14: Four people died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas inside a well at Garh Karmauni village in Bihar's Gaya district, officials said.

The incident occurred in the Dobhi police station area of the district. The deceased have been identified as Chamari Manjhi, his son Dilchand Manjhi, Vikas Chaudhary and Vijay Chaudhary.

Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar said all four died after reportedly inhaling poisonous gas inside the well.

The incident has triggered grief in the area, with authorities initiating necessary measures following the deaths.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to provide an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

In a post on X, Choudhary described the deaths caused by exposure to poisonous gas in a well in Karamauni village of Dobhi block as "extremely heartbreaking" and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.

He said instructions had been issued to provide the Rs 4 lakh assistance to the dependents of each deceased person immediately and ensure all possible help to the affected families.
