Kasargod, May 25: A teenager’s life was saved in a dramatic rescue at Neeleswaram railway station, thanks to the presence of mind and courage of a local bank employee.

Gireesh Kumar, an employee of SBI in Kanhangad and a resident of Cheeramakavu, was at the station on the evening of May 23 to pick up his wife when he witnessed a horrifying incident. Around 6 pm, as the Yesvantpur Express was slowing down at the station, Gireesh saw a young man being struck and dragged under the train near the platform.

While stunned onlookers froze, Gireesh rushed to alert the station master and immediately returned to the spot to help the victim. Without hesitation, he crawled under the train to reach the injured boy. He was soon joined by Meghna, a postgraduate student from the Palathadam Campus of Kannur University, who assisted in the rescue efforts.

With more people joining in, the trapped teenager was carefully pulled out and rushed to a nearby private hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later shifted to another hospital in Kannur.

The victim was identified as 18-year-old K Akshay, a class 12 student at Ambedkar Government Higher Secondary School, Kodoth. He had suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the ICU. Hospital authorities have since confirmed that his condition has stabilised and he is out of danger.

Reflecting on the incident, Gireesh expressed relief at having been able to save the boy’s life, saying the sight of Akshay’s recovery brought him immense peace.
