Udupi, May 18: In view of the approaching monsoon and to ensure the safety of tourists, the Udupi district administration has imposed a ban on entry to the popular tourist destination, St Mary’s Island in Malpe. The ban is in effect form from May 16. The restriction will remain in force for four months, during which time all adventure water sports at the island will also remain suspended.
With sea waves intensifying and wind speeds increasing, the tourism department has taken this precautionary step. The ban will be effective until September 15.

Boating activities along the west coast are generally prohibited during the monsoon season, and the ban on entry to the island is in accordance with Harbour Craft Rules. Tourists have been requested to cooperate with the district administration during this period.
Although many tourists are visiting the Malpe beach during the summer holidays and there have been appeals to keep access to the island open for a few more days, the district administration has reiterated that, as in previous years, the entry ban from May 16 is necessary to ensure public safety.
Adventure water sports suspended
Adventure water sports activities and access to St Mary’s Island have been suspended due to the monsoon forecast and related safety regulations. However, tourists are still allowed to visit the beach itself. Assistant director of the tourism department, Chandrashekar, said that from June 1 onwards, barricades will be put up along the length of the beach as an additional safety measure.
