BMC issues showcause notice to Mithun Chakraborty over alleged illegal construction in Malad

Mumbai, May 18: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a showcause notice to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty for allegedly carrying out unauthorised construction at his premises in Malad.

Dated May 10, the notice accuses Chakraborty of constructing a ground floor and a mezzanine floor—a partial level built between two main floors—without prior approval from civic authorities. The BMC has cited Section 475A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, which allows for legal prosecution in cases where unauthorised constructions are not dismantled.

As per the notice, the structures in question include:

• Two ground floor units with mezzanine levels
• Three temporary units (10x10 feet each) made from a mix of brick masonry, wooden planks, glass partitions, and AC sheet roofing

These additions were allegedly built without obtaining requisite permissions, a violation that could attract penalties or forced demolition if not addressed.

Chakraborty has been asked to respond to the notice and explain why action should not be taken against him. Failure to comply could lead to legal proceedings and removal of the said structures by civic authorities.
