Shirgao stampede: One survivor still critical, two show remarkable recovery

Panaji, May 17: Three weeks after the tragic stampede at the Shirgao Temple zatra of Devi Lairai, the condition of one of the three remaining patients at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) remains critical, while the other two have shown “remarkable recovery,” a top hospital official confirmed on Friday.

According to GMC medical superintendent Dr Rajesh Patil, the critically ill survivor has developed a pneumonia patch, which requires extended treatment. “It takes a relatively longer time to clear, typically several weeks or even a month. He is under the care of our pulmonologists, who remain positive about his recovery,” Dr Patil stated.

The two other patients, though recovering well, are still being closely monitored by senior pulmonologists at GMC and are expected to be shifted to the pulmonology ward before discharge in the next couple of days.

Following the May 3 stampede, a total of 21 injured were admitted to GMC. While six were discharged within days, the rest underwent prolonged treatment. As of Friday, all except these three — who were critical and placed on ventilators — have been discharged.
