Trump claims India ready to cut tariffs, but trade deal still on hold

Washington, May 17: US President Donald Trump has claimed that India is willing to eliminate 100% of tariffs on American goods, but indicated he is in no hurry to finalise a trade agreement.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump described India as one of the most protectionist countries, making it ‘almost impossible’ for US businesses to operate. “They are willing to cut 100% of their tariffs for the United States,” he said, adding that while talks are progressing, he is not rushing into any deals.

Trump also mentioned that other countries, including South Korea, are eager to sign trade agreements with the US. However, he said he would be selective, noting that over 150 countries are seeking deals.

India is currently aiming to secure a trade agreement within the 90-day tariff suspension window declared by Trump on April 9, which included a 26% tariff on Indian goods. According to Reuters, India has proposed narrowing the tariff gap with the US from 13% to below 4% in an effort to gain relief from the proposed hikes.

Despite these discussions, Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar emphasised on Thursday that any trade deal must be mutually beneficial. “These are very complicated negotiations... nothing is decided till everything is,” he said.

India and the US recorded approximately $129 billion in bilateral trade in 2024, with India enjoying a $45.7 billion surplus. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal is expected to meet soon with US trade representatives to further the negotiations.
