Anti-communal taskforce may be extended to more districts: Home minister Dr G Parameshwara

Bengaluru, May 14:The Anti-Communal Taskforce, which is being established with the aim of curbing communal riots and crimes in Karnataka’s coastal districts, may be expanded to other districts across the state, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara stated on Wednesday.

He added that incidents of moral policing would also be brought under the jurisdiction of the Anti-Communal Taskforce.

Earlier this month, Parameshwara had announced that a taskforce, modelled on the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF), would be set up in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to control and prevent communal disturbances.

Speaking to reporters today about the initiative, Parameshwara said, “Instructions had been issued to the Director General of Police to submit a proposal on this matter. I have now been informed that the proposal has been sent. We will review it and approve it at the government level. Initially, I had announced it for two districts, but now there is a possibility of extending it to all districts affected by communal issues.”

When asked whether moral policing cases would also be assigned to the taskforce, the Minister replied, “If moral policing incidents are merely social issues, they will be handled by the regular police. However, if they have a communal nature, such cases will be handed over to the Anti-Communal Taskforce.”

This move signals the government’s intent to take stronger, coordinated action to prevent communal violence and maintain peace in sensitive regions of the state.
