Patna, May 6: In a landmark move set to further propel India’s presence in the global sporting arena, Sepak Takraw has officially been included in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) Bihar 2025, thanks to a combination of stellar international performances and relentless efforts by the Bihar State Sports Association (BSSA).

This inclusion comes on the heels of India’s historic gold medal win at the ISTAF World Cup, where the men's regu team stunned the world. India had already clinched medals in the last two editions of the Asian Games (2018 and 2022), laying the foundation for the sport’s growing popularity.

Terming the development as a “milestone moment,” former India international and competition manager for KIYG Bihar 2025 Karunesh Kumar highlighted the long-term impact. “The inclusion of Sepak Takraw in KIYG not only reflects the sport’s relevance but also reaffirms Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of sporting excellence through the Khelo India initiative. It has now become a brand of its own,” Kumar noted.

While traditionally dominated by India’s Northeastern states, Bihar has rapidly emerged as a new powerhouse. Post-Covid, the state has seen a significant increase in participation, with over 600 active players across districts. Notably, Bihar’s Bobby Kumar was part of the World Cup-winning squad, and three more players from the state have made it to the national team.

The state government's recognition of Sepak Takraw as one of 14 priority sports and their mandate for training camps before major events has played a crucial role in nurturing talent. "Our team underwent a 30-day training camp. We are confident of clinching at least one medal in all four categories – doubles, regu, quad, and team,” Kumar added.

The sport's entry into the Khelo India roster is expected to further broaden its reach to grassroots levels, especially with support from the Sports Authority of India’s training centres (STCs).

With Bihar scripting a success story and India making waves internationally, the stage is set for Sepak Takraw to rise as one of the country's most promising emerging sports.
