Patna, May 3: In a major boost to Bihar’s healthcare sector, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday inaugurated a new 1050-bed block at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) — a key step towards transforming the facility into the world’s second-largest hospital.
The newly launched wing features 65 ICUs, 100 private rooms, 10 deluxe rooms, and two suite rooms, significantly expanding access to advanced medical care across the state.
Accompanied by deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, health minister Mangal Pandey, and senior health officials, CM Kumar also rolled out new OPD and emergency services in maternity, ophthalmology, and ENT departments.
“This is the largest expansion in PMCH’s history a proud moment for Bihar,” said deputy CM Choudhary, speaking to media.
Officials stated that the project is not just about infrastructure, but about creating an AI-enabled, smart medical hub. The coming months will witness the launch of super-specialty services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, along with state-of-the-art labs, trauma centres, and multi-specialty OTs.
“This building symbolises the future of healthcare in Bihar,” said CM Kumar. “PMCH is becoming a national and global medical landmark.”
The Rs 5,540 cr mega project aims to expand PMCH’s total capacity to 5,462 beds, with a helipad for air ambulance services.
The CM further reiterated his government’s commitment to upgrade health services across all districts, with new medical colleges and hospitals being established to ensure quality care reaches every corner of the state.
