Udupi, May 2: “Even if the police file a case against us, we should carry weapons in our cars for our own safety, just like the police carry guns,” said BJP convener of Mangaluru region Uday Kumar Shetty, during a protest held in connection with the murder of Suhas Shetty in Bajpe Mangaluru, near Udupi District BJP office on May 2.
Uday Kumar Shetty, referring to the current political climate said, “When India gained independence, the idea of Ramarajya was envisioned, and our party, the BJP, has always aspired to build a nation based on those ideals. However, except for about 10–20 years, the Congress has ruled the country and has consistently followed a policy of minority appeasement, despite the creation of Pakistan as a separate nation for Muslims. Hindus are often treated worse than ordinary citizens under their governance. A nation needs strong leadership and a clear direction to progress.”

Uday Kumar Shetty, stating about safety, said, “Suhas Shetty was brutally murdered on the road, and incidents like this continue under Congress rule due to poor leadership and inaction. He might have survived if he had carried a weapon in his car. His death shows that being good and unarmed can be dangerous in today’s environment. Just like the police carry weapons for their protection, citizens too must be prepared to defend themselves, even if cases are filed against them.”
Uday Kumar Shetty, further said, “We’ve seen many such murders, but no firm action is ever taken. So, it’s up to us to safeguard our own lives. Even in the wake of the terror attack in Kashmir, we believe our Prime Minister will take the necessary steps. At that time too, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah merely spoke about peace without action.”
Kishore Kumar Kundapura, president, Udupi district BJP, said, “Ever since the Congress came to power, people are living in constant fear. For the sake of vote bank politics and appeasement of the Muslim community, Congress has been indirectly supporting such acts. During the Pahalgam terror attack, victims were identified and killed based on their religion, yet Congress chose to blame the central government instead.”
Kishore Kumar Kundapura, stating about the murder case, said, “The entire nation witnessed the video of Suhas Shetty being murdered in the middle of the road and the accused escaping without any hesitation or fear. We’ve seen several such killings in the past, and it’s not surprising if similar incidents happen again, possibly to any one of us. To prevent such crimes, the police force needs more officers like Annapoorna, who took swift and bold action against the accused in the case of the young girl’s murder in Dharwad.”
The protest saw the participation of MLA Kiran Kumar Kodgi, former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Udupi district BJP secretary Reshma Uday Kumar Shetty, and other BJP leaders.
