Kasargod, May 1: In a tragic accident, an eight-year-old boy died after falling on a sickle while jackfruit was being cut at a house in Padi Belluradka under the Vidyanagar police limits on April 30 evening.

The deceased has been identified as Hussain Shahbaz, son of Ameer and Sulaika from Pilankatte, Badiadka.

Hussain had come with his mother to visit his grandmother's house in Alampadi Belluradka. While his mother was cutting a jackfruit outside the kitchen using a muttu katti (a sickle fixed on a wooden base), the boy, who was playing nearby, accidentally slipped and fell on the sharp blade.

He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Kasargod, but doctors were unable to save him. The cause of death is reported to be a deep injury to the chest. Hussain was one of a pair of twins.

Vidyanagar police have registered an unnatural death case.

That Katti is really unsafe especially when the end of the katti is not curved but sharp and pointed. Even if someone brushes on a katti which is kept upside down can loose toes or suffer a cut on the legs.
