Mumbai: Alistair Pereira Surrenders in Hit and Run Case

Mumbai, Jan 16 (IANS): Four days after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail in a 2006 Mumbai hit-and-run case, 25-year-old Alistair Pereira surrendered in a special court here Monday.

On Jan 12, over five years after Pereira, driving under the influence of alcohol ran over 15 labourers sleeping on a Mumbai pavement and killed seven of them, the Supreme Court upheld a Bombay High Court verdict awarding him a three-year jail sentence.

According to the Supreme Court verdict, Pereira, who has only served one month in jail, will now have to serve the three years of imprisonment.

The apex court bench of Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice J.S. Kehar cancelled the bail bond of Pereira, the son of a rich businessman, and directed him to surrender.

Pereira holds an engineering diploma. The hit-and-run took place on Carter Road in suburban Bandra Nov 12, 2006.

He was convicted by a sessions court April 13, 2007, which awarded him six months imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.5 lakh that was to be paid to the victims.

Pereira challenged the conviction before the Bombay High Court, which Sep 6, 2007 confirmed his conviction and enhanced the sentence to three years. It also criticised Mumbai police for slackness in the investigation and taking too much time to submit its report.

Pereira had challenged the high court verdict in the Supreme Court. He was granted bail at that time.

Alistair Pereira ran over 15 laborers sleeping on the pavement in a drunk driving case and killed 7 hard working people and he gets only three years in prison. What kind of justice is this? Is it the power of money? He should have got 21 years of jail for the killing and that too without bail or other considerations. If it was in the US he would have never come out of jail even if you are a millionaire.

THIS SHOWS THE POWER OF MONEY.
5 lAKHS FOR 7 LIVES FEW EVEN MORE PATHETIC HANDICAPPED SURVIVORS.
AND THE LADLA FINALLY IS BEHIND BARS FOR ONLY 2 YEARS AND 9 MONTHS MORE.
NOTHING AND NOTHING WILL CHANGE IN THIS WORLD.
I AM SURE NOBODY IN HIS FAMILY OR FRIENDS CIRCLE WILL HAVE EVEN A LITTLE REMORSE. LET ALONE ANY FEELING FOR THE FAMILIES OF THE POOR HAVE NOTS.
HE WILL ENJOY IN A NEARBY JAIL IN THE VICINITY OF HIS POSH HOUSE.
EVERY DAY THERE WILL BE HOME COOKED DABBA SERVED IN THE CELL (IF AT ALL HE IS CONFINED THERE). MAY BE EVEN HIS FAVOURITE LIQUID DIET OR EVEN MORE THAN THAT.
WHO KNOWS HE MAY KEEP SOME PROXY IN THE JAIL AND ENJOY IN A FOREIGN LAND FOR 3 YEARS OR LESS (MAY BE RELEASED WITHIN 12 MONTHS FOR EXTRA ORDINARY GOOD BEHAVIOUR (FOR NOT BEING THERE AT ALL)).
THERE WILL BE MANY OF US HAPPY THAT JUSTICE IS FINALLY SERVED.
YOUNGSTERS OF MUMBAI, PLEASE TRACK THIS MAN IN FUTURE. DO NOT ALLOW HIM TO SHOW MORE ANTICS IN FUTURE.
IF HE LIVES IN CORRECTIVE MANNER BETTER FOR HIM.
WATCH HIS EVERY MOVE. THIS MAN IS NOT AT ALL USEFUL FOR THE SOCIETY.
IF HE LIVES WITHIN THE RULES TOLERATE HIM. OR AS AMEER KHAN SAID
    'VIRODH KARO,BAAR BAAR KARO'.
