Hazare Dehydrated, Asked to End Fast

Mumbai, Dec 28 (IANS) Doctors Wednesday pleaded with Anna Hazare to end his three-day fast begun Tuesday, saying he was suffering from dehydration and could face kidney failure.

A team of doctors led by T.P. Lahane of J.J. Hospital said after examining the 74-year-old activist that he must call off his hunger strike.

"While lying his blood pressure reads 120/90, but while standing it is 105/70, indicating dryness and dehydration," Lahane told reporters at the MMRDA ground, the protest venue.

Besides, his blood urea nitrogen and cretanine levels had risen and sodium levels had fallen. But his chest, throat and abdomen were clear, he said.

Hazare has 100 degrees temperature, a drop from Tuesday's 102 degrees.

"We are clear he should not continue this fast as his kidneys are getting affected and could have adverse impact on his health in future," Lahane said.

"We have also medically advised him not to undertake similar fasts in the future."

But an adamant Hazare, who declared Monday that he was prepared to die for the cause of a strong Lokpal, continued his fast for the second day.

Although Hazare is on medication, his physician D.G. Pote ruled out the need to shift him to a hospital.

Pote said that Hazare had lost weight due to his illness, including a viral infection in recent days, followed by his hunger strike that started Tuesday morning.

After spending a "comfortable night", doctors said, Hazare now weighed 70.5 kg, a loss of around 1.50 kg in five-six days.

"His pulse rate has come down to 72 from 96, and blood pressure is 152/90," Pote said earlier in the day.

He said Hazare had been advised rest, refrain from exerting himself and speak less.

Manish Sisodia, a key member of Team Anna, said that Hazare's health was a matter of serious concern and they had appealed to him to call off his hunger strike.

Hazare has not ventured out of a room near the stage since Tuesday evening.

Mumbai's temperature, which touched a 10-year low of 11.4 degrees Celsius Tuesday, drove away many supporters in the night from the venue.

The sprawling MMRDA ground Wednesday wore a near deserted look with only security personnel, journalists and Team Anna activists present.

Anna came to Bangalore but refused to criticise the BJP Govt.
He did not criticise BJP for supporting the Reddy brothers in the Bellary mine scam.
The BJP betrayed the parliamentary standing committee and did not support UPA to pass the historic Lok Pal Bill's constitutional status still Anna & Co. did not attack the BJP.
From the day one, Anna & Co was just attacking Congress alone and not even its alliance.
Kiran Bedi was openly insulting our PM Mr. Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi.
Anna too was openly abusing the Congress president and the cabinet ministers.
Kiran Bedi had cheated the organisers that had trusted her incredibility.
Supporter of Ann made dharnas only in front of Congress ministers.
Ann supporter openly helped the opponents of Congress party win the By-elections by even supporting corrupt candidates of the opponent parties.
Ann was using loose language against his opponents and even good politicians.

Anna's attitude was dictatorial and never accepted advices from his companions.
Day by day, instead of humbleness, he was becoming arrogant and radical.
Over all the whole movement of Anna was to defeat the Congress by hook or crook and the public realised it hence there was hardly a few hundred supporters, mostly north Indians, that did not marked their presence at the sprawling MMRDA ground.
Anyways, the GenNext should force the Govt to pass a strong Lok Pal Bill and not a Frankenstein Lok Pal Bill.
    Jai Hind!

Corruption is the biggest enemy for the development. It was prevalent in the mankind in one or the other form from the day of Buddha, but it should be under check. As long as Anna was not opposing a particular party all the people are supporting the movement. Once he came out openly against Congress - people who are supporting Congress started hating the campaign. Still I have respect for Anna Hajare, he is fighting for our future generation whereas he dont have any personal ambition. May Godbless Anna with good health and long life.

Nobody supports corruption and all of us want a clean govt. at the centre. Also there is a democratic way of bringing about change or the Lokpal bill. This madman is trying to hijack the legitimate, elected central govt. by his mindless tantrums. Looks like he is not aware of the democratic law making process and the BJP is blindly supporting him. This has given him a boost and he has directed his fight against the Congress party. Looks like he is totally lost his physical and mental balance and wasting peoples' time. It is a great relief that majority of the people have finally realised the facts and his popularity is dimishing by the minute.

Kevin Dias, I dont agree with your Taking UPA to ransom theory. Taking ransome is what Gurjars did in Delhi rajastan, What Shiv sena and MNS doing in Mumbai. This is peaceful agitation. Nobody is forced to support Anna. Please read Some Comments I saw which is true and may change your thinking:

Indians are the biggest enemies of Indians. we deserve to be a third world country. We deserve to have thousands of crores stolen from us. If we cannot differentiate men of integrity from men trying to obfuscate issues, then we deserve the leaders we get. Amazing how those opposed to Anna are diluting the movement. If Anna does not represent you - that's perfectly fine. Does the Govt. having administrative control over the CBI represent you? Does a clause that penalizes the complainant more than than the corrupt represent you? Does a LokPal appointmented by members of the Govt. represrnt you? Why don't we just appoint the Home Minister as LokPal and be done with it? Maybe that would represent you.
Anna is against CORRUPT and LOOTER Parliamentarians, not PARLIAMENT.

People cannot make Laws on Street, but Parliament can be used for SCAMS and LOOT. Jai ANNA HAZARE !!!
Supporting this movement might just bring about a positive change in our system. Opposing it will definitely not help anyone, except for the corrupt politicians. So please, don't blatantly dismiss this as "blackmail", or "RSS agenda" and extend your support to it. Jai Hind.

Less said is better about this so called new Gandhi. The crowds at Mumbai now prove that people have come to their state of mind, India is a Democratic Country and that respect for MP's who the people have elected to Parliament have the right to pass the Lokpal or any bill in the best interest of people of this Country. Taking the UPA to ransom by all these agitations is just giving a bad example to youth of this Nation. Let wisdom prevail not all this Tamasha. God Bless.
