Anna Begins Fast as Lok Sabha Debates Lokpal

Mumbai, Dec 27 (PTI): Amidst cheering supporters, Anna Hazare today began his three-day fast here in protest against a "weak" Lokpal Bill even as Lok Sabha initiated a debate on the proposed law.

Hazare, who is suffering from a viral infection, arrived at the MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex of suburban Mumbai along with his close aides Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi and Manish Sisodia to a thunderous applause and slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Vande Matram'.

Hazare began his fast shouting slogans of 'Vande Matram' and 'inqilab zindabad'.

The 74-year-old activist reached the venue after paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Juhu Beach while on his way in a rally, which took two-and-half hours to reach the ground, passing through Santacruz, Tulip Star Hotel, Mithibai College, S V Road, Vile Parle, Khar and Bandra Highway.

Hazare travelled in a decorated open truck from the guest house to MMRDA grounds waving tricolour and a number of people were seen waiting to greet him on the streets.

However, there was high drama on way as around 20 men blocked his convoy and showed him black flags. The convoy of Hazare, on way to Mahatma Gandhi's statue on Juhu beach, was briefly stopped by the protesters carrying black flags and national tricolour and shouting "Anna Hazare murdabad".

In Delhi, Lok Sabha started a discussion on the bill.

However, Team Anna's protest elicited a lukewarm response with supporters blaming the winter chill and absence of Anna Hazare for the low turnout at Ramlila Maidan.

The protest relay fast in Delhi was scheduled to start at 10 AM but it started only 90 minutes later as the crowd was not as huge as witnessed during the earlier agitation when Hazare was at the centre stage.

The leader of the protest in Delhi Shanti Bhushan himself came to the podium at 10:30 AM though another Team Anna member and his son Prashant Bhushan was at the venue before explaining to media persons about the protest and the delayed start.

Hazare was supposed to sit on a fast here but the venue was changed taking into consideration the weather in the capital. The activist is staging a three-day fast in Mumbai.

Prashant blamed the chilly and foggy weather for the low turnout in the morning. "I am sure people will come here as well. It is a cold day, foggy day today. It will take sometime for people to turn up. They will come, don't worry," he said.

Activist Gopal Rai said winter and probably the absence of Hazare may be the reason for the low turnout but expressed hope that more people will come.

Explaining the need for protest, Prashant said the Bill in its present form is unacceptable. Protest will continue as well as jail bharo agitation, he added.

Team Anna has raised the pitch yesterday by pointing out "four non-negotiable" demands for calling off their jail bharo agitation which included provision for an independent investigating agency for the anti-corruption ombudsman.

In Mumbai, police have fortified the fast venue by deploying 2000 police constables and 200 sub-inspectors of police, six platoons of state reserve force, three Quick Response Team and two Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads.

The ground has six emergency exits, 16 fire extinguishers, six metal detector units and round-the-clock ambulance services.

We all talk about corruption but have we avoided any time being involved in corruption. For example who is paying bribe to persons at government offices to get done the work as we wish and as we desire. Is it not we? Even if the Lokpal get consitutional status these kind primary bribing things cannot be avoided by any one whatsoever the circumstances be?

Anna thum age bado, hum sub thumhare sath hai, we know even if you fast for 365 days nothing will happen to you. Even if your version of bill is presented you will put some other objection and start fasting. U don't want the bill to be passed till next election, so that BJP will have an agenda to fight during election. In your squint eyes u can see only Chidambaram n not Yeddy. You get elected to parliament n dictate your terms in parliament. Don't spoil the peace of country n spoil our countries name. U can fool 10 people for life long, can fool 100 crores for 10 days but cannot fool 100 crores for 100 days?

I wish the movement had stayed on course. it was a call against corruption and was apoolitical.
In fact intellectuals from different backgrounds and leaders from different movements came on one platform and they had just one purpose before them:to fight against corruption.
A few dissenting voices were rudely brushed aside because they were seen raising doubts expressed about the movement.
The BJP-cum-RSS owned him and gave him all support through its cadres and leaders.Still Anna's candid statement if the BJP or the RSS supported him.
I think that the biggest mistake when Anna and his 26 member team announced that they would oppose the Congress candidate in the Hisar By-election.In fact the call was to defeat the congress candidate. An apolitical body began to acquire political political colour. Now Four state assembly election is already announced.Anna's team complexion changed from then onwards.

CBI (congress bureau of investigation) is a sister organization of congress. It is required for congress to arrest only the non-congress politicians.

So, that is why UPA is not bringing CBI under lokpal bill...

I am sure the formula proposed by Anna to eradicate corruption is not practical. It looks good only on paper because the people who are supposed to implement his plans are themselves corrupt. Corruption will stop only when people will go by their consciousness NOT TO ACCEPT bribe. In a TV show "Sach Ka Saamna" all the people who participated in this programme are corrupt.

Now they want to change themselves and do you think the "Nature" will change overnight. Does it mean that the people found in the crowd of Anna Hazare are all honest ?? There may be Government department staff who take bribe in the office during day time and join the anti-corruption crusade of Anna in the evening. It is a funny scenario, but this is the reality. Food for thought .....

with all respect to Mr. Anna Hazare, he is going to lose the pupularity by sticky to only his words. Let the government pass the Lokpall bill and keep the provision to changes which can be done in the 2nd stage. There will be lot of loophole which can be fixed only after passing the bill. There is always difference with theory and practical.

Since our politicians are not interested to introduce the strong Lokpal Bill since 1947, I think the fight of Anna Hazare will be in vain. If it is passed in the Parliament in line with the proposal of Anna, 50% of the politicians will be in Jail. So all the citizens of India should see that the strong Lokpal Bill is passed instead of teethless bill. Jai ho Anna.

I will support anna, Even if BJP/ RSS / SIMI / PFI / or Any christian activities supports him. One must not see this agitation as fight against any particular religion or against any political party. But this is against the Corruption.
If one cannot support him through their participation, atleast must give MORAL support to him. BUT IT IS NOT FAIR ANYONE TO QUESTION HIM, and TARGET HIM. It is like finding perfection when you know there is nothing called perfection. One must know Where does this country stands in terms of Corruption.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER... LETS SUPPORT ANNA..

I feel very pity by reading some people comments here who target ANNA, and question him where was he till last year.
First of all let me know this is his 23rd fight against corruption, Secondly there is no Age bar to fight against corruption. Its your cheap mentality who thinks anna is selfish, or he is fighting against UPA. this is due to your contribution towards Corruption is very very highhh....and nothing else. its purely your cheap mentality. people Who question about his integrity should first think yourself How corrupt You are.. and what is your contribution to this country..
