Lucknow, Dec 26: Terming the present Lokpal draft as a danger to democracy, Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav announced that his party would press for amendments.

"We will not accept the Lokpal Bill in its present format. It is a dangerous sign for the democratic set-up," said Mulayam on Sunday. The yadav chieftain claimed that the present format of Lokpal will bring all the politicians under a police officer. "Going by this a thanedar will be free to hound us. It will not be accepted. A thanedar can harass any politician which is not a good sign for democracy," he said.

Alleging that it is the sinister design for Congress to bring in such a Lokpal so that it can use arm twisting tactics for its political adversaries, he said, "Congress believes that it is the natural party to remain in power and it will go to any extent in harassing the opposition political leaders," he said.

Over Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) stand on Lokpal, Mulayam claimed that both Congress and BJP are hand in glove with each other. "BJP never corners Congress in the parliament. It has failed in its role as opposition," he said. Recalling his days as opposition leader in UP assembly, Mulayam claimed that government used to remain under pressure and ministers used to meet him discreetly for going slow. "At that time opposition was effective in putting checks and balances on the government," he said.
