Bravo Century Steers West Indies to 378/3

Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS): Darren Bravo struck his third century in four Tests to steer the West Indies to a comfortable 378 for three in their first innings at lunch on the second day of the third and final cricket Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium here Wednesday.

Bravo was batting on 105, his second consecutive century against India, and Kieran Powell was on 38 as the West Indies added 111 runs for the loss of one wicket in the morning session. Kirk Edwards (86, 165 balls, 13x4)) was the only wicket to fall.

Resuming at overnight 267/2, both Bravo and Edwards scored quickly, in complete contrast to the morning session's play on the first day. Their third-wicket stand of 164 runs took the West Indies past the 300-run mark.

Indian bowlers toiled hard but hardly troubled the West Indies batsmen. Bravo made his intentions clear right from the start and hit Varun Aaron for two consecutive fours off the first two balls of the day to set the tone. The debutant fast bowler found himself at the receiving end as Edwards also came down hard, hitting him for three fours in his back-to-back overs.

Ishant Sharma finally gave something to cheer for in the Indian team by removing Edwards with an excellent delivery that pitched just outside off and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni took an easy catch behind the stumps.

New batsman Powell, however, kept the runs coming with six boundaries and the 50-run stand for the fourth-wicket came up quickly in 66 balls. Bravo got to his third Test century in style with a four off Ravichandran Ashwin.
