Olympic Lifting Champion Liao Hui Fails Dope Test, Banned


Beijing, Nov 18 (IANS): China' Beijing Olympics weightlifting champion Liao Hui has been banned by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) till Sep 30, 2014 after testing positive for a banned substance.

Liao, 24, winner of the men's 69-kg category , was on the list of suspended competitors released by the IWF on its official website.

Liao was tested positive in a spot check last year. He presented an impressive performance by breaking the 69kg world records of jerk and total at Antalya world championships later from Sep 17 to 26 in Turkey. Liao's gold medal and world record at the 2010 worlds were also deprived, Xinhua reported.

Liao won the gold medal in the 2009 and 2010 World Championships.

Liao was absent from all the events including the Asian Games and the Asian championships saying a shoulder injury kept him out of China's squad.

Along with Liao, another nine weightlifters were suspended by IWF for taking banned substance.
