Beckham Asked to Prove His Place in Olympics Team

London, Oct 20 (IANS): England's star footballer and former captain David Beckham has been told that he should prove why he deserves a place in the Team Great Britain for the 2010 London Olympics.

But England Under-21 manager Pearce - who has been unveiled as the boss of Team Great Britain for London 2012 - Thursday insisted that he would select players only on the basis of form and fitness and no exception would be made for the LA Galaxy star.

Pearce has told the 36-year-old Beckham his place at the London Olympics is far from guaranteed. But Beckham, a former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, is desperate to play at next summer's Games in what would be the ultimate farewell to his international career.

"I've no idea. I've not seem him play recently - he's a bit old for the Under-21s," said Pearce during the press conference a the Wembley.

For the first time since 1960, Britain will have football teams competing at the Games.

"I am extremely proud to have this opportunity and I'm very much looking forward to getting started. I was fortunate to be part of Euro '96, so I know how special it can be to play for your country on home soil at a major tournament. I'm sure this group of players will relish being part of not only a huge tournament in this country, but a unique one competing together and representing the UK," said Pearce.
