Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Apr 16: Fredrick Fernandes, one of the oldest residents in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, residing in an urban hamlet at Surathkal, approximately 15 km from Mangaluru, passed away on April 16 after a brief illness, surrounded by his family members at his bedside. He was 102 years old.

Born in the then composite parish of Angelore on October 22, 1921, Fredrick Fernandes received his education at St. Joseph's Primary School in Kankanady and completed his 11th standard at St. Aloysius College in Mangaluru. He later relocated to Mumbai, where he secured employment with Nestle. Subsequently, he worked for 'May and Baker' and 'Britannia' companies.

In an exclusive interview with Daijiworld TV last year, he fondly shared many memories, particularly of meeting Mahatma Gandhi, Pope John Paul II, and Queen Elizabeth during his time in Mumbai.

Fredrick Fernandes is survived by his wife, Lilly Fernandes, and four children.

Funeral details are awaited.

RIP Sir!! Comfortably crossing the 100 mark and ahead, hale and hearty is a great achievement for anyone; in that you moved to Bombay and worked in such reputed MNCs is another big achievement; very surprisingly you stuck to Bombay and did not join the bandwagon (very common during that time as the oil boom had just started and would have been very easy for you) to get to the Gulf to earn petro dollars! Perhaps if you had migrated to the Gulf to earn lots of money your story would have been completely different! Your simplicity, routine, satisfaction with what you had, and discipline (no alcohol and no smoking) along with your inherited genetic traits and good fortune made you live such a healthy life so long; biggest blessing is till the end you didn't have the misfortune of falling into the hands of "sick care professionals" or the misfortune of being forced to live in an 'old age home'; what a blessing of good luck to finish the innings here in your own home with your life partner and loved ones besides you! Once again, may your soul rest in eternal peace, nowhaving merged with the Universal Consciousness!!
