Mangaluru: Water at Thumbay depletes, supply from Harekala dam initiated

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 14: In spite of water supply from the AMR dam, the water level in Thumbay dam is decreasing by 0.08 meters daily. The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to utilize an additional pump to extract water from the Harekala dam.

Every day, 50 to 60 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water is pumped from the Harekala dam into Thumbay dam. Given that Mangaluru city requires 155 MLD of water, approximately 40% of this demand is met by extracting water from the lower part of the Harekala dam. Therefore, MCC has deployed an additional pump for this purpose.

As of Thursday, the water level in Thumbay dam stood at 5.59 meters, sufficient for the next 50 days. MCC clarified that water rationing will not be implemented at this time. However, it is currently not feasible to transfer water from the AMR dam to Thumbay dam for the next 30 days due to the former's water level being 15.68 meters above sea level. Consequently, the district administration has instructed MCC to arrange for the pumping of water from the Harekala dam to Thumbay.

The grievance control room established by MCC has been inundated with calls over the past week, with over 50% of them related to drinking water shortages. In response, MCC has opened a new control room specifically dedicated to addressing drinking water issues. Citizens may contact 0824-2220306 or 2220303 to resolve their drinking water shortage concerns.

Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan stated, “Drinking water is being supplied daily from Thumbay dam, and there is currently no shortage in Mangaluru city. However, the water level in Thumbay dam is gradually decreasing, prompting several measures to avert any potential drinking water shortages in the future.”

I travelled from Bangalore to Mangalore during the day , one thing I observed was that right from Sakleshpur reserve forest area upto Bantwal there is continuous highway construction in progress and there is loads and loads of tanker water used for construction as well as dust settlement. So more than ususal water is being used. Government should stop this construction at least till reservoir is not full.
