Mangaluru: Confusion persists as DC’s deadline nears for installing doors on buses

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Mar 27: A month ago, deputy commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan issued an order stating that all buses registered after 2017 must install doors for the safety of passengers. As the deadline approaches, there is considerable confusion regarding the installation of doors on buses. While some owners claim there is no such requirement for city buses.

Speaking to Daijiworld, former president of the Private Bus Owners Association, Jayasheela Adyanthaya, stated, "We have conducted meetings with the transport and police departments, urging them to exempt buses registered before 2017 from the requirement to install doors. The newly amended rule mandates that buses registered after 2017 come with pre-installed doors."

The DC has clearly stated that all private city buses registered since 2017 must install doors within the next month and submit an affidavit to this effect. The body structure of buses registered before 2017 is fundamentally different. Installing doors on these buses would require extensive modifications to the body structure, incurring significant expenses. If buses registered after 2017 do not have doors, the responsibility lies with the company. Some buses originally had doors but were removed for convenience.

"We prioritize passenger safety and take all necessary measures. While installing doors is something we can do gradually, requiring immediate installation poses significant challenges," says Jayasheela Adyanthaya.

It may be recalled that a bus conductor died on the spot at Nanthoor after slipping out of a door. Since then, concerns regarding the safety of passengers and conductors have been raised.

"It may be recalled that a bus conductor died on the spot at Nanthoor after slipping out of a door. Since then, concerns regarding the safety of passengers and conductors have been raised." So, the death of a conductor prompted a change in safety standards. What about the countless people who died due to overspeeding and reckless private buses? What has the DC done about this?

Better to cancel the permits of these private buses playing with passenger safety. There is unhealthy competition between the bus operaters leading to increase in bus speed. I have personally witnessed while traveling from Mangalore to udupi. I was very sad to see elder person standing just near the door and the driver was driving the bus in very high speed . First priority should be given to Safety. Can't understand why these things took so many years in Mangalore to Adopt.

Correct sir, you're giving importance to passengers safety, but bus owners wants more collection because, more numbers of passengers are traveling on footboard than the sitting capacity. That's their main income.

All private buses may have to be replaced with new buses having a door open-close system. Govt have to help and guide to get new systems before bringing them into action. routine inspection of buses also should be done by RTO when bringing a new system.

Shocked by the response. I have travelled, first studied then worked, all over India for last 45 years - best, metros, railways, planes, auto/taxi ALL public transport, regularly coming back here for vacations, and ALWAYS our extensive and timely private bus service has BLOWN MY MIND ALWAYS and in ALL areas. First economic, every other service is heavily subsidised heavily which means that we pay many many more TIMES (not just MORE) the ticket value ALSO the allied services like garages, fuel pumps etc. Then safety just imagine the SHEER VOLUME of not just passengers but buses and then compare the safety, NOT JUST NEWS STORIES, then think of coverage every nook and crany in ENTIRE dk is covered and ON TIME - ask the students and office goers, I can go on and on... you people are just spoiled for choice

Nobody has born to control the city and service buses in DK and UDUPI. If our DC is going implement this rules, he should be ready for transfer within 24 hours. Instead of doors to buses, his door will be open for transfer immediately.

The first facility a smart city should have is a very sturdy public transport system like local railways, metro, BRTS roads etc; with the existing crumbly/sloppy infrastructure hardly much of manipulation can be done to improve the system excepting that the administration starting a unique and dedicated public road transport system on the lines of BEST in Mumbai!!

Dear Agnes, You will know the consequences once you the city buses are vanished. Please dont rubbish things because the private buses in DK and Udupi districts are the role model in India. Accidents happen, but everything should not be blamed to the private buses and its drivers. No one here does the accidents purposely. Why dont you propose to ban two wheelers which is very dangerous. In DK and Udupi districts, the drivers and the conductors are polite and when its vanished and the Government buses ply, you will notice the rudeness of the conductors and drivers.

Please go to Uttara Kannada district where NWKRTC has monopoly. Then you will understand the importance of our private buses. I had to wait three hours in the scorching heat in Sirsi just to get a bus to Kumta. And I am talking about the fast express bus. About the local buses the less said the better. Very few and crowded like sardines. You have to do kung fu karate just to get in.

Passenger safety is the up most priority and the conductor and the bus drivers are ignoring it . They take off even before the passenger completely boards the bus . Bus takes off at a rocket speed. For them reaching on time is more important rather than passenger safety now tell me are doors needed in bus or not These people are both physically and mentally unsafe . We must respect orders and ask for more time rather than saying no to such Safety measures

There should not be any confusion if the DC`s instruction is clear and genuine. Simply don`t allow any buses to move on the road without doors after the end of stipulated deadline. No extension or exemption please.

All the private buses without exception should install doors otherwise the owners should be fined heavily and put in Jail . So many lives are lost by people falling from these doorless buses .

The Pvt Bus Lobby here is very strong. No secret. Be it any political party. Only the Free Bus Ride for Women has dented this lobby a bit. The other day saw some posh women travelling in red bus to Bengaluru. Free... No??What doors?? What confusion? 🤔If this continues DC will be shown the door! That's all.

Posh women have no conscience hence they shamelessly utilize the facility given to the poor; same like so many shameless posh families owning BPL cards... obtained through devious means 🙃😌
