Beware of rattlesnakes, cobras as breeding, sightings likely to increase

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (VP)

Mangaluru, Mar 26: In the foothills of Karkala and Hebri taluks, the movement of rattlesnakes is likely to increase starting from the first week of March right up to June. The sightings of these snakes is likely to become quite common in places such as Ajekaru, Shirlalu, Keruwashe, Mala, Mudaru, Bajagoli, Hosmaru, Idu, Andaru, Munialu, Mudradi, Kabbinale, Nadalu, Madamakki, Alpadi, Chara, Hebri, Kuchuru Agumbe, Kundapur taluk, But, this venomous reptile is mostly found in parts of Beltangady taluk where a large activity of snakes is witnessed.

Female cobras can traverse up to a range of 5 km but they live within limits while their male partners move in range up to 8 km. During the breeding season, the range of males is limited to 2 km although in normal circumstances they can travel long distances and return to their original base.

Females can usually grow up to a length of 9 feet while males up to 12 feet. It is believed that snakes should not be seen mating and this is the faith of many. The sole objective of this belief seems to be that humans should not disturb the mating activity of the snakes and so are the beliefs kept.

A fight between male cobras is called a kombat.

Speaking on this topic, Nagaraj Bellur, a snake rescuer and environmentalist said, "Snakes are cold blooded and they are completely different from the other animals that humans know. Even the king cobra is a completely different snake in the family of snakes as it belongs to a different species. There are four types of Cobras and the king cobras are a different species not because it is more venomous but because they have a higher amount of venom in them. Most of the Cobras mate during the month of March and it is during this mating season that the female cobra releases sex pheromones, a kind of chemical which allows male snakes to understand about the presence of the female snakes.

The male snakes follow the smell emanated by the females and nearly 4-5 male cobras gather to fight in a combat to go for the mating. Usually the mating process happens anywhere from four days to three weeks and we have a record of sighting Cobra pairs together after three weeks of mating."

He further added that "When venomous snakes enter into places such as houses and sheds it is mainly because of poor cleanliness maintained there. Cobras and other snakes feed on frogs and rats etc and so if they have a chance of finding a source of food near residential areas then they enter such areas. Whenever a venomous snake is seen, call the forest department officials and if it's a cobra in such cases only a few experts can rescue the snake. Sometimes, the snake rescuers leave the deadly reptile in another place. However, there is a need to create awareness among the public that cleanliness should be maintained in the surroundings of our homes. Snakes like king cobras live in its territory and due to increase in human settlements it is causing a problem to their existence. There are some experts who say that the population of King Cobra is increasing and I believe that it's a false claim."

On importing snakes for domesticating them, he said "Any Indian snake species should not be kept as pets. There are some snakes which are imported and are allowed to be kept as pets but it should be clear to such pet lovers that they cannot leave these creatures into the forest area because these snakes are likely to cause unrest among the existing snake population.”

On precautions to be taken when encountered with snake bites, he said, “When a snake bites we should initially make sure that the patient is not scared because a bite increases the heart beat due to which there is a rush of blood. He should then be rushed to a nearby hospital where an anti-snake venom medicine is readily available. Usually, we recommend such patients to visit a district government hospital or dispensaries where some doses of anti-snake venom are readily available. In India, around 60,000 people die of snake bites every year. I request those affected by snake bite to engage, hire or take a vehicle and reach the hospital as soon as possible. Do not try an Ayurveda medicine at the very instance of the bite or other types of herbal medicines if you have been bitten by a venomous snake.”

In India we find the 'Big Four's venomous snakes and they are: 1) Spectacled Cobra , 2) Russells Viper, 3) Saw Scaled Viper and 4) Common Krait. These are known as the big four snakes because these four snakes are responsible for the highest number of mortalities of about 58,000/annually. India doesn't have rattlesnakes, however with no or limited knowledge people tend to catch the snakes and end up in hospital. Remember whenever a snake bites you, do the following: 1) Re-assure the bitten victim (Not all snake bites are venomous and not all venomous snakes bites are intended to inject venom) 2) Immobilize (Use a crepe bandage) 3) Go to the Hospital 4) Tell the doctor (Tell the doctor for any symptoms like Nausea, Dizziness, Bleeding etc). Do not do the following: 1) Do not tie a torniqutte/Towel/Rope etc 2) Do not try to suck the venom (As shown in movies) 3) Do not go to a local healer 4) Do not panic (Panic Increases Blood flow and if the venom is injected, it can reach the vital organs very quickly). 5) Do not try to identify the snake (It is not at all required in any case). However, if you know to identify it's ok. 6) Do not try any home remedies. What to do: 1) Use a torch post dusk (Even though you maybe staying at your home from a long time and despite knowing your surroundings well). 2) Always use a closed footwear. Snake bites are treatable at any hospital today, every hospital is equipped with Anti Snake Venom (ASV).

Kindly note Cobra is identified by Spectacle mark or Y mark. Viper is identified by pointed head or V head. Do not look for only bands or spots or reticulates.

Antony, we can make out a snake whether its cobra or not, only when it displays its "hood"....otherwise, normally we cannot make out whether its rat snake or cobra so quickly. Because they crawl fast....Krait/vipers mainly come out in the night in search of their prey.....Thats why always one should carry a powerful torch after the sunset....light makes them blind...But, one should be careful not to move the direction of the light. If you do so, they jump up once the light is moved.

Hello Dr Kusuma Kumari Gunji MBBS DGO DNB MRCP, Why do you say viper bites are most dangerous ? People rarely die of their bites. You have time to go to hospital and get treated. Rattle snakes in America are a specie of Viper. Cobras and Kraits are deadly and you may die even before reaching hospital. Please check you medical books again.

This phenomenon is nothing unusual during the breeding season, but in fact this year the movement of various types of snakes out of their natural habitats would be on a distinct rise due to the unprecedented heat wave along with acute scarcity of drinking water in their natural habitats! BTW; rattlesnakes, IMO, are not found in India, in that they have a rattle like organ at the end of the tail with which they can make a rattle like sound!! Somebody having knowledge of herpetology could guide us on the existence of rattle snakes in India! Unfortunately, big problem is lay people tend to kill even non poisonous reptiles, which are otherwise very important for the environment as pest predators! Also the local primary health centers need to ststock themselves up with polyvalent antivenom vaccines in case of accidental bites...

Report speaks many things, but does not touch the core issue, deforestration. Trees in the wild and land mining in forest areas by land mafia putting these animals at brink of extinction since past 10-12years. There is unprecedented devastation happening not just in Karnataka, but across the country. Last year Himachal experienced landslides that even affected 1000s of year old temples and shrines. Himachal voted decisively against BJP later, to show such devastation is unacceptable. Here in Karnataka, we hope congress rein strongly against the sand and land mafia, to save mother nature.

Cynthia, Dk — yes, all rattlesnakes are vipers. Rattlesnakes are venomous snakes that form the genera Crotalus and Sistrurus of the subfamily Crotalinae (the pit vipers) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattlesnake. Rattlesnakes are only found in the Americas. However, there are vipers and pit vipers that exist in the Ghats and even the regular urban areas of India. No, rattlesnakes are not native to India. Kandodi is Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) a highly venomous snake in the family Viperidae native to the Indian subcontinent and one of the big four snakes in India https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell%27s_viper
