Mangaluru: Lokayukta nabs MUDA commissioner accepting Rs 25 lac bribe

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Mar 23: In a significant anti-corruption operation, Lokayukta sleuths have apprehended Mansoor Ali, commissioner of the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 25 lac. The bribe was being solicited in exchange for issuing TDR clearance.

Under the leadership of DySP Cheluvaraj, inspectors Amanulla and Suresh Kumar, the operation unfolded, resulting in the arrest of Mansoor Ali and broker Mohammed Saleem.

The operation stems from a complaint filed by Sri Giridhar Shetty of Sagar Courts, Kottara, Mangaluru, alleging harassment by Mansoor Ali and Mohammed Saleem regarding the issuance of a TDR certificate.

Following the trap set by the Lokayukta team, both accused were caught red-handed after accepting the bribe. A sum of Rs 25 lac was seized from them, and they are currently in police custody.

The case was registered under CR No - 03/2024 u/s 7[a] PC Act 1988 [amendment Act 2018] on March 22.

Dear Lokayuktha , can you kindly raid on Moodbidri Municipality council? The official employee (ladies specially ) who is taking bribes . They are very very rude and without giving bribes no work will be done. One of my friend was looted by lady who works in Moodbidri TMC. She looted him 40k just getting the khata done as it was coming under Muda and she later fooled him saying now MUDA has cancelled . He lost 40k. How the common people will survive ?

Good they are caught red handed. But it is near to impossible to iradicate corruption. One small example is, if you go to mini vidhana soudha to get the property tax done through a advocate you will have pay to each person where the paper goes from the top to bottom you have to pay. Big fish for a signature it is Rs. 700, for the typist 400 the list goes on. And at the last for printing and giving Rs. 200

@Monty; the problem with big projects is that majority of the developers are involved in all sorts of manipulation to squeeze maximum amount of money as possible and push the project to the buyers; in such a situation, these chaps have to shell out lots of money to the authorities concerned; so it's a give and take affair! I wonder how many multistoried structures will actually pass the authorization stage if at all the processes were to be reviewed again....imo.....none???

@Monty Dotor; forget about these big fishes; in my very keen observation, in Mangluru, every second person is a self styled finance/brokerage professional; these people are so hungry for moolah that they take cuts in every dealing they get involved into, right from birthday party upto the grave (including the undertaker and all associated procedures rituals) . ...

If most of the government and Municipal work is done online without person to person contact - like incometax dept corruption will reduce. So that the servers are not intentionally kept " down" , the IT portion should be outsourced to big IT companies like what they did in issuing passports.

I have seen a person just like Saleem (broker) some years before. He used to hang around the revenue section of MCC, if he is the same person he has an outstanding loan of 42L with Canara Bank, now with interest more than 70 L ( hence probably now " promoted " to MUDA. The name of his building is same as that of SRK's house!!!

It is ridiculous that siphoning of fund, bribe, corruption is taking place only at higher level,by highly educated authorities at higher level. Arrests are being carried out by Lokayukta and after that what happens God only knows.Unless our legal system is not streamlined, corruption, bribe etc cannot be stopped.

Though, imo, this might be a regular kickback for all big projects where the stakes are very high (the builders too earn a lot by charging highly inflated rates for flats from gullible and ill informed investors who later on get trapped), this guy is very unlucky to have gotten trapped, which seems to have been a very well planned trap! Please note that this is an unbiased personal opinion only and in no way condones the act of accepting and giving bribes; please do your own research and analysis!!

Let us not tie it with Ramadan because most of us do not understand or practice, especially those that comment whilst expecting reciprocity that do not comment about our religion if you do not understand. I do not that think that religion encourages corruption. But every religion explains what corruption is viz., what you do not do at home in aid of your parents and family is corruption. Let us leave it at that.

Lokayukta only can make arrest, and everything stops there only. Have any lokayukta arrests culminated in prison terms? None actually. Lokayuta bill was diluted to ensure that it does not have the teeth to bite and that wrests with police department which works under the control of the government of the day.
