Mangaluru: Drinking water scarcity in spite of Thumbay dam being filled to capacity

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Even though the Thumbay dam currently holds six feet of water and is releasing excess water, approximately 30 out of the total 60 wards of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) are experiencing a shortage of drinking water.

Every day, 160 MLD (million litres per day) of water is pumped from the Thumbay vented dam. However, by the time it reaches Mangaluru city, the available quantity decreases to 120 MLD. The primary reason for this reduction is the presence of numerous large holes drilled into the main pipeline by miscreants at various locations. With over 110 illegal perforations along the main pipeline, approximately 40 MLD of water is lost, leading to a shortfall in the city's water supply.

The majority of these large holes are drilled by wealthy individuals to divert water for use in their commercial establishments and auditoriums. Additionally, water theft occurs for agricultural purposes. As a result, residents of the MCC who dutifully pay taxes are left with insufficient water.

In response to the acute shortage of drinking water in the city, the MCC administration formed four teams to disconnect illegal connections. However, within a few days, offenders re-drilled holes into the main pipeline, exacerbating the situation.

Praveenchandra Alva, the leader of the opposition in MCC, said, "During a recent special meeting convened to address the water crisis, members from both the ruling party and the opposition party of MCC raised concerns about the shortage of water affecting over 30 wards. It is imperative that the administration takes proactive measures to curb the misuse of water. Failure to do so will inevitably result in severe water scarcity during the summer months."

Sudhir Shetty Kannur, the mayor of MCC, stated, "Instructions have been issued to the relevant officials to address the water challenges in specific wards. Additionally, eight wall men have been recruited to deter unauthorized water extraction from the main pipeline. Furthermore, a bulk water meter has been installed in Padil and Thumbay."

In rainy season fresh water is allowed to flow through 4 rivers from mangalore suburban to sea and sea irrotion. Same water from these are rivers can be stored by installing dams and storages can generate electricity and can be used during summer. I blame poor management .

I think if anyone has any idea in how to save water is very important . Some one has written car wash stations to close down for time being. People should use bucket water to wash their own cars and not using tap. Here i see commentators attack one another like a joke. I was attacked also. It is not acceptable unless it is a valid pro/anti view. Prople have no right to make fun of another commentator.

Impossible to do such precision job without the connivance of the concerned authorities; very serious issue for a single large pipeline supplying water to a supposed Smart City, which is already starving for reliable potable water supply.... year on year 😔🙏!!

The majority of these large holes are drilled by wealthy individuals to divert water for use in their commercial establishments and auditoriums. -Muncipality to take immediate steps to curb this illegal connections. Also stop water supply to MRPL , MCF , BSF and other industries . Ask them to set up their own desalination plant . State government to go for aggressive water harvesting during rainy season

First rain and the unique smell of dry mud emerging from ground and tiles. I used to enjoy that natural odour. Also, Kerosine lamp burning smell. Thanks tuka poise karinaka maka 🙏

Every year, evenif the water is penty, there arises acute water shortage problem....if sufficient water is not there also, same "WATER SHORTAGE" statement. Concerned officials are facilitating the tanker mafias by saying so....??? In the rainy season, many hear the SAME ISSUE.... reason, being given is that jack has drowned/pump house has drowned etc. Some areas get interrupted water services throughout the year whereas other areas never get water. Last month 3/4 days water was not there because, water pipes were damaged during the construction work by Rohan corporations. When officials know wealthy individuals drill the pipes, why you officials just hold the meetings and say WATER SHORTAGE ?? Why can't you serve the notices to concerned wealthy individuals? These 'wealthy individuals' cannot take water connections legally? At least they can stop constructing their bldgs during this water crisis? Its Rain water god's given free gift to human kind...and some are playing with god....Whats the use of saying water shortage even after Thumbay having sufficient water ? Any sense ? Solve the issue and keep aside tanker business....As Kuju bhaiyya says, only very very few raise their voices against their grievances others are enjoying the fruit by the efforts of these few people....disgusting mangagala ooru....
